About This Free PDF to Markdown Converter
Markdown is the plain-text format that documentation, READMEs, notes, and many blogs are written in. A PDF, by contrast, is a fixed-layout format: it knows where every character sits on a page, but it does not know which lines are headings, which are list items, or which form a table. This tool bridges that gap. It reads the text of your PDF and rebuilds its structure as Markdown — # Headings, - lists, 1. numbered lists, and | pipe tables | — so the result is readable, editable, and ready to paste anywhere Markdown works.
Everything runs in your browser with pdf.js. No account, no signup, no watermark, no queue.
How Headings, Lists, and Tables Are Detected
The converter uses signals inside the PDF itself — not guesswork about the words:
- Headings: lines set in a larger font size than the body text (and usually bold) become
#,##, or###headings, ranked by size. Short lines in body-size text stay as paragraphs. - Lists: lines starting with a bullet (
•,-,*) become-items; lines starting with a number followed by.or)become numbered items. - Tables: consecutive lines whose text is split by wide horizontal gaps become
| pipe | tables |. This is best effort: simple, evenly spaced tables convert well; complex tables with merged cells or wrapped text may need a tidy-up after conversion. - Page breaks: when the option is on, a horizontal rule (
---) marks where one page ends and the next begins, so you can tell which content came from which page.
What Markdown Keeps — and What It Does Not
Markdown keeps structure: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, and the order of the text. It does not keep fonts, colours, exact layout, page backgrounds, headers and footers, or images. That is the point of Markdown — one plain-text file that looks right in every editor — but it means the output will not look like the original PDF. If you need the exact visual layout, keep the PDF. If you need editable, portable text with structure, Markdown is the right format.
Images and Scanned PDFs
Images are skipped in this version. The converter extracts text only; pictures, charts, and diagrams do not appear in the output. A note in the output tells you images were skipped, so nothing is silently lost — check the original PDF for figures you need.
Scanned PDFs have no text to convert. A scan is a picture of a page, not selectable text. If the converter reports no text found, your PDF is probably scanned. Run it through OCR PDF first to make the text selectable, then convert the OCR result to Markdown.
When This Is Not the Right Tool
- You need the exact visual layout, fonts, or colours — keep the PDF, or use PDF to Word for an editable document.
- Your PDF is a scan or photo of pages — use OCR PDF first.
- You only need the raw words with no structure — PDF to Text is simpler and faster.
- Your PDF is password-protected — this tool cannot open encrypted files. You will need the password first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PDF to Markdown really free?
Yes. The PDFPax converter is free with no signup, no watermark, and no install. Your PDF is processed in your browser.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
No. Scanned PDFs contain images of text, not selectable text. Run them through OCR PDF first to make the text selectable, then convert to Markdown.
Are images kept in the Markdown output?
No. Version 1 extracts text only; images are skipped. A note in the output tells you images were skipped so nothing is silently lost.
Will the layout, fonts, and colours be preserved?
No. Markdown is plain text with structure (headings, lists, tables). Fonts, colours, and exact layout are not preserved — that is the point of Markdown.
Can I edit the Markdown before downloading?
Yes. The output appears in an editable box. Fix anything, then copy it or download it as a .md file.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. PDFPax PDF tools process files in your browser. Your PDF is not uploaded, not stored, and not seen by anyone.
